Your Partner in Innovation

Every day, we are blown away by our clients’ creativity and innovation. We have picked a few of their inventions to showcase in a series of articles.

In this edition, we feature an amazing invention by our client, Rooikat Recycling, brought to life by their partner firm, Waste to Fuels Technologies, which focuses on commercialising the chemical recycling technologies developed by Rooikat Recycling.

We asked their CEO, Mark Hobbs, a few questions about this invention:

TA: Tell us about your invention

MH: We convert waste (mainly plastic) into biofuels and chemicals, such as methane, ethane, propane, butane, kerosene, diesel, and gas oil. Converting waste into fuel is not a new technology. Our invention combines existing technologies used in the petrochemical industry – depolymerisation – to convert waste into fuels. The advantages of using petrochemical technologies are scale and reliability.  We can process large amounts of waste using robust and proven technology.

TA: What problem does it solve?

MH: The existing waste-to-fuel technology is constrained in terms of feed quality and processing capacity.  We wanted a technology that can process different and lots of municipal waste (your garbage bin).  We want to get as close as possible to zero waste.

TA: Why did you file a patent for this invention?

MH: As a form of protection.  We don’t want someone else to stop us on our journey.

TA: How did you experience the patent filing process with Taberer Attorneys?

MH: Much less daunting and time-consuming than we expected.  Roy has been fantastic in guiding us through the process.

TA: Have you taken your patented product to market?

MH: Yes, we currently have three projects under development for a client.

TA: What advice would you give other inventors?

MH: Don’t give up. The brightest day comes after the darkest nights.  Surround yourself with good people with good intentions.
